THE CHALLENGES ON ATTA IGALA HANDS.
It is expected that the coronation ceremony of HRH Atta Igala, Idakwo Ameh Oboni ,will hold on the 27th of April 2013 as scheduled. Congratulations once again.
As one of the protagonists of his ascension to the throne, I am already worried that the prevailing environment in Igala Kingdom may make it difficult for him to deliver the pre 1956 era to us. I am particularly worried about the negative changes that have taken place in virtually all aspect of our cultures- total neglect of our taboos, religious chauvinisms that has metamorphosed to extremism, decline in communal system, corruption, political turgery, and all forms of anti Igala behavior.
Taboos are practices forbidden by our culture at a certain place or time and when violations are observed ablution or purification rites are undertaken immediately. There are so many of them that I will discuss in a separate write-up. We do know in our land today majority of our people are not clean culturally to interact or live unless they perform rituals for our ancestors or gods.
Christianity and Islam has penetrated Igala culture so much that it will be un thinkable for an Attah to go back and revive most of our obsolete cultural festivals without a very strong opposition from adherents of both religions. More churches and mosques are emerging daily all over the land as more and more ifa priests and soot Sayers are aging and dying.
Are we not already heading for cultural extinction?
Our communal system that guaranty love for all members of a community has seriously declined, so much that presently in our land everybody seems to be on their own. Foods, drinks, wealth, harvest, etc, are hardly shared as was the practice in the past. Corruption and political extremism, land and chieftaincy disputes, emanated from this dwindling communal values.
My position is that unless his Highness urgently tackles most of these issues, first, his much taunted cultural re-engineering will be a mirage. Agaba, Idu: Ami Deju.
